The Dean has the following faculties and duties:

  • Representing the Institute;
  • Participating in the University Board as a member with voice and vote and to take part in all the commissions that said Board should decide;
  • Participating in the Humanities Technical Council, as a member with the voice and vote;
  • Participating in the Academic Council for the Sciences Area, as a member with voice and vote;
  • Summoning the Internal Council and presiding over it with a voice and a vote, in case of a tie, his will be the deciding vote;
  • Summoning the Academic Personnel Cloister;
  • Presenting before the Humanities Technical Council all official matters and procedures of the Institute, when they fall into its competence;
  • Ensuring that the University Bylaws, academic plans and programs, and all and any dispositions and agreements that rule the structure and organization of the University be observed within the institute, and dictating all pertinent measures to that end;
  • Presenting before all the academic and administrative workers of the Institute a yearly work report that will be available to the public;
  • Producing work plans and projects of the Institute, and presenting them for the opinion of the Internal Council;
  • Producing the budget project of the Institute, and presenting it for the opinion of the Internal Council;
  • Proposing to the Provost the designation of an Academic Dean, and supervising its activities;
  • Supervising that work within the Institute be performed in an orderly and affective way, dictating any pertinent measures to this end;
  • Receiving the opinions of the Internal council in matters under its competence;
  • Spending the budget in the terms approved by the University Board;
  • Presenting for the approval of the Internal Council projects and research lines of academic personnel,
  • Freely designating and removing the Institutes's area coordinators and review directors;
  • Presenting for the evaluation and approval of the Internal Council yearly reports and work programs of academic personnel;
  • Proposing to the University Board of Sponsors and to the Administrative Secretary of the University a candidate to the position of Academic Secretary, and supervising its work;
  • Freely designating and removing those who occupy administrative and academic-administrative positions within the Institute, according to University Bylaws,
  • Performing research activities in the fields of law and legal science, and
  • All and any ruled by University Bylaws.

The Internal Council of the IIJ has the faculties of proposing, producing and approving all bylaws applied within the Institute, in addition to reviewing and producing an opinion concerning the budget projects produced by the Dean.

Regarding institutional research activities, it may propose or evaluate research programs and institutional lines of research.

It is a governing body charged with setting minimal guidelines for academic productivity and guaranteeing their observance. It may also produce an opinion on paid commissions, changes of workplace and academic licenses presented before the Humanities Technical Council. These requests include application for sabbatical periods and the respective report that academics deliver when returning to their positions, as well as applying for aid to academic personnel who plan to organize or participate in academic events.

It must produce opinions concerning the candidates that take part in contests organized by the Institute to cover academic positions, the renewal of contracts or interim positions of academic personnel, and about closed opposition contests.
